While the major supermarkets require a short car ride from campus, there are a few places to get basic groceries near the medical school if you must go by foot.
WALKING DISTANCE
Lexington Market
www.lexingtonmarket.com
Address: 400 W. Lexington St.
Phone: 410-685-6169
Hours: Mon-Sat, 8:30am-6pm
Directions: Go north on Paca St. past Fayette St. You will see both buildings of Lexington Market on either side of Paca St.
Bottom Line: In addition to being a popular place for lunch, Lexington Market is also a great place to find fresh fruits, vegetables, meat (more sketchy), and seafood at reasonable prices. There is also a grocery store inside to buy dairy products and manufactured goods and snacks, and you can also find beer and liquors here. The building east of Paca St. is the main market, though there are more shops and stands in the building across the street.
The Loft Convenience and Deli
Address: 38 S. Paca St.
Phone: 410-837-4600
Hours: TBA
Directions: From Pratt St, go north on Paca St. one block. Loft Convenience and Deli is located on the northwest corner of Lombard St. and Paca St.
Bottom Line: Located one block east from the hospital, you can find basic groceries and snacks (but no produce) as well as deli service. Prices are rather expensive but at least it's nearby.
Ridgely Mini-Mart
Address: 633 Washington Blvd.
Phone: 410-752-2887
Hours: TBA
Directions: Going south on Greene St, turn right onto Washington Blvd. and look for it on the left side.
Bottom Line: With dry-cleaning services, liquor, and a deli, the Mini-Mart is a convenient place, especially for Ridgely's inhabitants, to get some light groceries, at a price, of course.
Save-A-Lot
www.savealot.com
Address: 717 Washington Blvd.
Phone: 410-837-0747
Hours: Mon.-Sat. 8am-8pm; sun. 8am-6pm
Directions: From MLK, go west onto Washington Blvd. Save-A-Lot is immediately on your left side.
Bottom Line: Just west of MLK at Washington Blvd., Save-A-Lot has mostly generic-brand groceries at significantly cheaper prices. The quality of their products won't match those at other grocery stores, but it's the only real grocery store within walking distance of campus. Be careful - it's west of MLK - especially if you go late in the day.
BY CAR
Giant
www.giantfood.com
Address: Rotunda, 711 40th St.
Phone: 410-467-0417
Hours: Open 24/7
Directions: Going north on Charles St., turn left onto University Parkway. At the second light, make a left onto 40th St. You will see the Rotunda on the left side after a few blocks.
Shopper's card: Yes
Bottom Line: It's pretty far for just going for a grocery run, but you might consider stopping by if you are up north. There is no pharmacy in this supermarket, but Rite-Aid, also open 24/7, is just across from Giant within the Rotunda.
Han Ah Reum
www.hanahreum.com
Address: 800 N. Rolling Rd.; Catonsville, MD
Phone: 443-612-9020
Hours: Daily 8am-10pm
Directions: From MLK, turn left and go west on US-40. Turn left on Rolling Rd., soon after Us-40 intersects with I-695. Han Ah Reum will be on the right side.
Shopper's card: No
Bottom Line: Han Ah Reum is a Korean supermarket featuring Asian products, in addition to the traditional Western goods you may find in other supermarkets. Produce is plentiful, and there are full-service meat and seafood counters. There is also a cafe inside where you can get sushi and Asian platters such as babimbop and noodle soup. The major downside is that it's pretty far from campus - it's in Baltimore County, outside the city.
Safeway
www.safeway.com
Address: 2401 N. Charles St.
Phone: 410-261-6110
Hours: TBA
Directions: Go north on Charles St. You will see the entrance on the right between 24th and 25th St.
Shopper's card: Yes
Also located at: 1205 W. Pratt St., 410-625-1163
Bottom Line: Safeway is a full-service store complete with bakery, pharmacy, deli, and bank located relatively close to campus. The store is clean and the selection and availability of products is wide.
Shoppers Food Warehouse
www.shoppersfood.com
Address: Southside Marketplace, 855 E. Fort Ave.
Phone: 410-727-1246
Hours: Daily 6am-midnight
Directions: From Pratt St., turn right onto Light St., then turn left onto Key Highway. After curving to the right and back to the left, turn right onto Lawrence. St. Southside Marketplace, where Shoppers Food Warehouse is located, will be straight ahead.
Shopper's card: No
Bottom Line: Shopper's Food Warehouse is a typical grocery store. Since there's no club card required, you may find that on-sale items aren't on sale for much less. The store includes a full-service deli, seafood, and bakery and is conveniently located in the Southside Marketplace, a few miles away from campus.
Whole Foods Market
www.wholefoods.com
Address: 1001 Fleet Street, Suite A
Phone: 410-528-1640
Hours: Mon.-Sat. 8am-10pm; Sun. 8am-9pm; Cafe opens daily at 7am
Directions: Going east on Pratt street, head past the harbor and turn right on President St. Turn left on Fleet Street and go about a block. You will see Whole Foods on your right.
Shopper's card: No
Bottom Line: Whole Foods specializes in organic foods, which means that their groceries are a bit pricey. However, they host a great prepared foods section, and their bakery is excellent.
